Dear Fellows,

It has been some time since the Academy has communicated with you via letter. We have fixed the website issue and will be making some significant changes over the next few months with its look and design. We apologize to you for the issues it has caused the membership. Thank you for your patience and understanding. You are appreciated.

Another reason you have not heard much about what’s going on the last couple of months is our intense work on accreditation.

Certifications for professions and organizations took off during the Carter Administration with a Federally funded grant to establish the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies (NCHCA). It was developing standards for quality certification of allied health fields to accrediting programs that met the standards. This program changed to National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NOCA). In 2009 it was changed to the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). Accreditation is both a process and a status.

As a status, NCCA’s accreditation recognizes and provides public notification that the certifying program is committed to self-study and external review by one’s peers, meets Standards and seeks continuous improvement to maintain the quality of examination and certification of its constituent professionals. Upon achieving accreditation, it is essential that the certifying program embraces transparency and accountability to its stakeholders, certificants, and the public through communications that are publicly available and readily accessible.

The revised Standards in 2013 retain their focus on certification programs and continue to be organized into five sections: (1) Purpose, Governance, and Resources, (2) Responsibilities to Stakeholders, (3) Assessment Instruments, (4) Recertification, and (5) Maintaining Accreditation. To earn or maintain accreditation by NCCA, the certification program must meet each Standard and provide evidence of compliance through the submission of required documentation. Accompanying each Standard are Essential Elements, which are directly related to the Standard and specify what a certification program must do to fulfill requirements of the Standard.

So you see we have been focused on completing this process by no later than 2018. We are grateful to the Council on Chiropractic Orthopedics (CCO) for a generous grant to the Academy to help pay for the expense. The American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (ACCO) has contributed a venue to obtain our Job Analysis. This is required every 5 years. Thank you to both organizations.

You will start to notice some major and minor changes in the Academy. This includes its governing structure and functions. It will make us compliant, and it will help with efficiency, governance and the examination process. I plan on frequent communiques with you to bring the changes to your attention. It has and will be all good for the specialty. This will bring the Academy into a major area.
