Academy President Letter
Volume 10, Number 6
September 2011

From the Desk of J. R. Brandt DC, MPS, FACO
Academy of Chiropractic

Good Morning Doctor,

The Academy has been quite busy this summer and I see no let up for this fall. We have ongoing projects that are moving right along.

You have been aware of our push for item writers for the Diplomate and recertification examinations. We also have picked up item judges, which is the second step in the process. We have a statistician, psychometrician and a computer programmer all working on test questions. I want to thank those doctors who stepped up to help. They will soon be contacted by the Item Writing Committee Chairman. Online classes will be held for this group as well as for the item judges. Currently the database is being developed.

Our process is getting quite sophisticated so that we will have the ability for the item writers to go to one site and enter the data. All the information will be stored on Academy controlled servers. I have been involved with orthopedic testing since 1987, and this represents a dramatic change from then to now. It is fortunate for chiropractic orthopedics that the Academy has taken over the responsibility of providing a Diplomate examination, and that this process has followed the protocols of development and testing that is accepted by credentialing agencies.

The Diplomate examination at Palmer College in Davenport registration is complete. We have a full schedule and all the allotted slots are filled. We have two candidates for fall 2012. That date has not been set, but watch the website. I want to thank those who referred friends and colleagues to sit the Board. There are still many disenfranchised doctors that have completed the necessary graduate study and are not aware of the Diplomate examination. It is not too early to talk to them and refer them to the Academy website for information.

It is also not too early to be thinking about attending the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists annual symposium in San Diego next April. The dates are April 26-28. The hotel is the Kona Kai Resort. (1-800-566-2524) Tell them when making your reservation that you are with the “ACCO”.

The Journal of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (JACO) is developing a mentors group to help doctors prepare their articles for publication. This makes the process much easier for busy clinicians to submit a case study or research. Please contact the Academy if you would like some help with a case.

Last month the Academy website had visitors from 60 countries. I get inquires every month from doctors around the world about chiropractic orthopedics. You may not know, but the Academy has membership from several countries throughout the world. We truly are becoming more and more international with our scope. The JACO has been part of this growth.

May you all have a safe Labor Day weekend.

The service we render others is the rent we pay for our room on earth…..Wilfred Grenfell
